Vacuum regularly on a low setting without the beater bar. High suction without agitation lifts dust without pulling at the pile. Rotate your rug every 6 to 12 months so it wears evenly.
Spot clean spills immediately by blotting with a clean, dry cloth. Work from the outside of the spill inward. Avoid rubbing. For stubborn stains, a small amount of cold water and mild wool-safe detergent, blotted carefully, is usually effective.
Do not steam clean or wet shampoo a hand-knotted or hand-tufted rug without professional guidance. Excess moisture can loosen the backing and cause dyes to run.
Professional cleaning every 2 to 3 years is recommended for heavily used rugs. We can recommend Auckland-based rug specialists on request.
Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle. Hot water shrinks natural fibres and fades dyes faster. Use a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Avoid bleach and optical brighteners.
Line dry in the shade where possible. Tumble drying on low heat is fine for cotton and linen, but avoid high heat. Remove from the dryer while still slightly damp and smooth by hand to reduce ironing.
Khadi cotton softens noticeably after 4 to 5 washes. This is the intended behaviour. The fabric is woven with some tension that releases over early washing cycles.
Stonewashed linen is pre-treated for softness and will not shrink significantly, but like all linens it will continue to relax over time.
Cushion covers can be spot cleaned or gentle machine washed on cold. Remove the inner insert before washing. Do not tumble dry cushion covers — lay flat to dry.
Duck-down inserts can be machine washed but must be dried completely before reinserting the cover. Low tumble dry with a few clean tennis balls to redistribute the fill. Allow 2 to 3 cycles to fully dry.
Wipe cane and rattan lampshades with a lightly damp cloth. Avoid soaking. Do not use cleaning sprays directly on rattan — the coating can cloud.
Terracotta pendants are unglazed. Clean with a dry brush or barely damp cloth. Do not submerge in water.
Brass fittings develop a natural patina over time. This is characteristic of the material. A small amount of brass polish will restore the original finish if preferred.
